Michelle Starkand Struck and Killed by Vehicle on Road 26 in Madera
Madera, California (April 23, 2020) – 55-year-old Michelle Fern Starkand has been identified as the woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle while pushing a shopping cart Sunday night in Madera.
As per the California Highway Patrol report, Starkand was pushing the shopping cart eastbound across Road 26, just north of Avenue 17 when she was hit by a northbound Kia driven by 19-year-old Madera resident Jose David Zaragoza at about 10:30 p.m. April 12.
Due to the impact, Starkand was found laying on the ground north of Haley Way by medical personnel along with Fire department officials who arrived at the scene shortly after the wreck.
Sadly, Starkand was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Zaragoza initially left after the crash and went home. He then returned to the area of the incident and cooperated with the authorities.
The investigation is still ongoing.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
