Luis Marin ID’d as Man Killed in National City Hit-and-Run Accident on Interstate 5 near State Route 54
National City, California (January 14, 2020) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who was killed early Saturday morning in a traffic accident on Interstate 5 in National City as Luis Felipe Marin, 36, of San Ysidro.
The deadly crash happened at about 4:52 a.m. Saturday, January 11 in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, just north of State Route 54.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling in the fast lane of northbound Interstate 5 at a high rate of speed when its driver illegally attempted to overtake a red car by using the center emergency lane.
The pickup truck then slammed into a disabled car that was in the emergency lane and hit the red car. Moments later, a grey SUV traveling on the interstate crashed into the black pickup truck.
Marin, who was inside the grey SUV, was declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the red car stopped after the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck did not stop to render aid and fled the scene. That driver was described as a 45-year-old man about 5 feet 10 inches. Authorities said they have leads about the identity of the driver and have notified U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in case the driver attempts to cross into Mexico.
All lanes of northbound I-5 were shut down for an hour following the crash. Motorists were diverted off Highland Avenue as authorities worked to clear the scene.
All lanes were later reopened to traffic.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
