Jeffrey Shumate Fatal Sunol Crash on Highway 84 at Vallecitos Road

Sunol, California (March 3, 2020) – Police officers have identified the name of a victim killed in a two-vehicle crash last month on Highway 84 at Vallecitos Road near Little Valley Road in Sunol.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau said Jeffrey Shumate, 60, of San Jose, was driving a Honda Civic on the roadway when he drifted across the center line into the opposite traffic and collided head-on with an oncoming Volkswagen Jetta.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash on Friday, February 21, at around 1:50 a.m.

Shumate was severely injured, and he was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he later died.

The driver of the Jetta, a 20-year-old Turlock woman, and her passenger, were taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious to moderate injuries.

The identity of the deceased was not disclosed.

The crash remains under investigation.
