Felipe Casarrubias Dies after Being Struck by Vehicle in Cardiff

Felipe Casarrubias Killed in Cardiff Pedestrian Accident on 5 Freeway near Manchester Avenue

San Diego, California (February 19, 2020) – Felipe A. Casarrubias, 54, of Pico Rivera, died from his injuries he sustained Thursday evening in a pedestrian accident in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.

The crash occurred on Interstate 5, just south of Machester Avenue at around 6:48 p.m. Thursday, February 13.

Authorities said Casarrubia parked his truck in the southbound emergency lane and had just exited the vehicle when a gray BMW struck him.

Casarrubia was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla in critical condition. On Sunday, February 16, his condition worsened and succumbed to his injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
