Channing Christy Seriously Injured in Cotati Bicycle Accident on Highway 116

Channing Christy Struck and Seriously Hurt by Truck on Highway 116 in Cotati

Cotati, California (February 7, 2020) – 24-year-old Channing Christy of Ukiah has been identified as the male bicyclist who was struck and seriously injured by a big rig in Cotati on Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to a local news source, the major injury crash happened at about 7:55 p.m. on February 5, along Highway 116.

As per the CHP report, Christy was riding his bicycle eastbound in the outside lane about a quarter-mile west of Stony Point Road when a Safeway truck operated by 55-year-old David Zarate of Stockton struck him from behind. Due to the impact of the collision, Channing Christy was ejected from his bike.

Zarate told detectives that he did not see Christy at the time of the collision.

Christy, who was wearing a helmet, sustained major injuries in the crash. He was hospitalized at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he was listed in stable condition

The cyclist’s bike was equipped with a flashing red tail light that was activated at the time of the accident.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected factors in the accident. An investigation into the crash is underway.
