2 Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad

Young Service Member from Utah Among 2 Killed in Carlsbad Car Accident on Interstate 5 near Las Flores Drive Off-Ramp

San Diego, California (January 14, 2020) – A possible young service member from Utah was among two people killed early Tuesday morning in a wrong-way car accident on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash took place at about 12:00 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near the Las Flores Drive exit.

The CHP said Oceanside Police officers were attempting to pull over a black truck for a traffic violation, but the driver took off at a high rate of speed. The driver then entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 heading southbound.

Moments later, the black truck collided head-on with a silver sedan.

The driver of the sedan, a 19-year-old military service man from Utah, and the driver of the black truck , a 42-year-old San Diego man, both died in the crash. Their names have not been disclosed pending notification of family.

A passenger in the black truck, a 35-year-old San Diego man, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It is undetermined whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.

Northbound I-5 near Las Flores Drive were closed following the crash. Motorists were diverted onto the Carlsbad Village Drive exit.  As of 5:45 a.m., all lanes reopened to traffic.

Further details were not immediately disclosed, and the accident remains under investigation.
