Oildale, California (May 15, 2020) – An elderly woman died after being struck by a vehicle Friday evening at an intersection in Oildale, according to a local news source.

The California Highway Patrol said the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Merle Haggard Drive and McCray Street.

Witnesses told the CHP that the woman had ran towards the center median to collect either a can or a bottle. She was on her way back to the sidewalk when she was hit by a pickup truck that was heading eastbound on Merle Haggard Drive.

The woman, believed to be in her 90s, was declared dead at the scene. Her name has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.

The driver involved stopped at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
