Rigoberto Calmo Identified as Victim in Fatal Thanksgiving Head-On Crash on Del Dios Highway near Mt. Israel Road in Escondido

Escondido, California (December 7, 2019) – Rigoberto Carillo Calmo, 47, of Escondido, has been identified as the driver who died in a head-on crash that occurred on Thanksgiving in Escondido.

The fatal accident happened at around 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 28 on Del Dios Road, just west of Mt. Israel Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Calmo was driving his 2006 Toyota Tundra eastbound on Del Dios Road at an unsafe speed for wet road conditions when he lost control around a curve and cross into the opposite lanes where it collided head-on with a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek.

Calmo, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

The driver of the Subaru, a 27-year-old Encinitas woman, was taken to Palomar Medical Center with major but non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the crash.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help cover Calmo’s funeral expenses. Authorities said Calmo celebrated his 47th birthday a day before he died.

The accident remains under investigation.
