Merced County, California (March 6, 2020) – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a big rig while walking on Interstate 5 in Los Banos early Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
At about 4:40 a.m., the authorities received a report regarding a pedestrian hit by a big rig on the southbound Interstate 5, just north of Whitworth Road.
According to the CHP, the big rig was traveling northbound in the number two lane at approximately 55 miles per hour when it struck a 30-year-old man who was walking in the southbound lanes of the interstate.
The man was knocked onto the east shoulder of the freeway after the impact. He sustained major injuries and was taken to Doctor’s Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the accident.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
