Maria Curiel Killed in San Jose Pedestrian Accident on West San Carlos Street

Authorities Identify Pedestrian Hit and Killed by Vehicle at West San Carlos Street and Brooklyn Avenue in San Jose as Maria Curiel

San Jose, California (February 26, 2020) – Authorities have identified Maria De Jesus Lopez Curiel, 55, of San Jose, as the woman who died Saturday evening after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross a street in San Jose.

At bout 7:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, police received a report regarding a traffic accident involving two pedestrians and a vehicle at the intersection of West San Carlos Street and Brooklyn Avenue.

According to the police, Curiel and a man were walking across the street inside a designated crosswalk when a 2018 Ford Focus struck them.

The two victims suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital. Sadly, Curiel later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the Focus stopped at the scene and cooperated with the police. Authorities said neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
