San Jose, California (March 10, 2020) – 89-year-old Manuel Fernandez of Victorville has been identified as the victim struck and killed by a vehicle on Monday afternoon at Princeton Drive in Victorville.
Fernandez was crossing Luna Road when he was hit by a white Chrysler minivan operated by 70-year-old Myrtle Meggs of Victorville east on Luna Road at about 4:32 p.m. on March 9.
The Victorville Police Department said Fernandez was walking south on Princeton Drive and crossing Luna Road at the time of the collision.
Meggs told authorities that she did not see Fernandez crossing the street before striking him.
Fernandez sustained major injuries in the wreck. He later died at a local trauma center while undergoing treatment.
The investigation is underway. Anyone with information regarding the accident is urged to contact Deputy J. Carroll or Deputy K. Campbell, the Victorville Police Department at (760) 241-2911 or Sheriff’s Dispatch at (760) 956-5001.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
