Man Seriously Injured in Taft Car Accident Wednesday Afternoon
CHP Investigating Taft Car Crash at Midway Road and North Lincoln Street
Taft, California (February 27, 2020) – 64-year-old Lloyd Watrous was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries after he was involved in a traffic crash Wednesday afternoon in Taft.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Midway Road and North Lincoln Street.
CHP said 52-year-old Karl Orrebrand was driving a 2007 Ford van westbound on Midway Road approaching the intersection with North Lincoln Street. Watrous and Mary Reed, 22, of Bakersfield were passengers in the van.
At the same time, Christopher Cazares, of Bakersfield, was traveling eastbound on Midway Road in a 2010 Jeep Wrangler approaching the same intersection.
Authorities said Orrebrand failed to see the approaching Jeep and turned left onto North Lincoln Street directly in the path of the Jeep.
The Jeep slammed into the right side of the van.
Watrous was trapped inside the van for about 20 minutes before Kern County firefighters fleed him using hydraulic cutters and spreaders.
He was rushed to Kern Medical by an air ambulance with serious injuries.
The two passengers in the van and the driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries. They were treated and released at the scene.
CHP said drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.
