Lakewood Man Dies Nine Days after Long Beach Pedestrian Accident on South Street

Lakewood Man Killed in Long Beach Pedestrian Accident on South Street near Downey Avenue

Long Beach, California (February 19, 2020) – A 62-year-old Lakewood man succumbed to his injuries after being involved in a pedestrian accident earlier this month in Long Beach, according to police.

The crash took place at around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 5 on South Street, just west of Downey Avenue.

Police said a 2003 Toyota Tacoma was heading westbound on South Street when it struck the Lakewood man, who was walking northbound across South Street outside a marked crosswalk.

The Lakewood man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. His condition declined and he died in the hospital on February 14.

Authorities said the victim was wearing dark clothing when the accident happened.

A 27-year-old Wisconsin man, who was the driver of the Tacoma, remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Alcohol, drugs or distracted driving was not considered factors in the collision.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
