Josephine Espiritu ID’d as Woman Killed in Long Beach Pedestrian Accident at Santa Fe Avenue and Hill Street

Long Beach, California (May 13, 2020) – Josephine Espiritu, 59, of Long Beach, has been identified as the woman who was hit and killed in a crash involving two cars on Monday evening in Long Beach, according to authorities.

The deadly crash transpired at about 6:45 p.m., at the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Hill Street in West Long Beach.

As per the police reports, a Lexus IS200 sedan crashed into a Honda Odyssey minivan as it was allegedly racing with a Nissan sports car southbound on Santa Fe.

The Lexus and the Nissan crossed paths with the Honda, which was heading eastbound on Hill Street at the time, said the police.

As a result of the collision, the Lexus spun into Espiritu, who was crossing the street legally.

Espiritu was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lexus driver sustained severe injuries but stable while the Honda driver suffered minor injuries. They were both taken to a hospital for treatment.

Drugs or alcohol were not believed to have contributed to the accident.

Detectives are expected to present a case against the Lexus driver at the district attorney’s office, which will consider filing charges. The Nissan driver kept going after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Det. Allen Duncan at 562-570-7355.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
