Driver Killed in Crash on Highway 152 in Los Banos
Man Dies, Two Injured in Los Banos Car Accident on Highway 152 near Highway 33
Los Banos, California (January 16, 2020) – One driver was killed and two others were hospitalized Tuesday evening after a multi-vehicle crash in Los Banos, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, the California Highway Patrol officers received a report regarding a car crash on Highway 152.
The CHP said a 40-year-old man was driving a 2006 Volkswagen westbound on Highway 152 in the number one lane at an unknown speed when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center median of the highway.
The Volkswagen then rolled over and entered into the eastbound lanes, where it was hit by a 2009 Freightliner big rig towing a trailer in the number two lane, driven by Tiem Lam Phu, 59, of Los Angeles.
The force of the impact with the big rig caused the driver of the Volkswagen to be ejected. The big rig continued in a southeasterly direction off the roadway, where it struck an exit sign and a barbed-wire fence.
The impact caused the Volkswagen to spin into the center median, where it burst into flames. The crash also caused the front axle of the Volkswagen to detach and thrown into the westbound lanes of Highway 152, where it was hit by a 2015 Nissan driven by Felipe De La Cruz, 29, of Santa Clara.
The driver of the Volkswagen, whose name has not been disclosed pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Phu was taken to Modesto Memorial Medical Center with major injuries. Cruz suffered minor injuries and was transported to Los Banos Memorial Hospital.
The accident remains under investigation.
