Douglas Ward Seriously Injured in Fresno 2-Vehicle Crash at Fowler Avenue and American Avenue

Fresno, California (March 6, 2020) – The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of a traffic accident that killed one person Thursday morning and left another with serious injuries in Fresno.

The wreck happened in the area of Fowler Avenue and American Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5.

Authorities said Douglas Ward, 71, of Fresno, was driving a white Ford Fusion southbound on Fowler Avenue when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and collided with a tractor-trailer that was heading westbound on American Avenue.

Douglas Ward sustained major injuries and was transported Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. His wife, Karen Ward, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Justo Cantu Jr., 45, of Del Rey, who was driving the tractor-trailer, stopped at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Investigators said neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the crash.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
