San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Garrett Pontier Dies after Car and Semi-Truck Collide on 15 Freeway near Main Street Off-Ramp in Hesperia

Hesperia, California (April 1, 2020) – A rear-end accident claimed the life of an off-duty sheriff’s deputy early Tuesday morning and left another person with major injuries in Hesperia.

Authorities said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Garrett Pontier, 22, of Apple Valley, died in the crash that occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 31 on Interstate 15 Freeway, just north of the Main Street off-ramp.

According to a report by the California Highway Patrol, Pontier was driving his 2003 Honda Accord northbound on Interstate 15 Freeway when, for reasons still under investigation, he rear-ended a truck-tractor combination that was also heading northbound.

Emergency personnel responded and pronounced Pontier dead at the scene.

A 21-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man, who was riding as a passenger in the Pontier’s vehicle, was flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

An investigation into the crash is underway. The CHP Victorville Area asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call them at (760) 241-1186.
