Authorities Identify Man Killed in Big Rig Crash on I-5 in Merced County

Jamee Chargualaf Killed in Merced County Car Accident on Interstate 5 near Highway 140

Merced County, California (January 10, 2020) – The man who was killed early Wednesday morning in a traffic accident in Merced County has been identified.

Jamee Chargualaf, 24, of Hanford, died in the wreck that took place at about 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, January 8 on Interstate 5, just south of Highway 140.

The California Highway Patrol said a 2014 Volvo semi-truck trailer, driven by a 54-year-old Sun City man, was traveling northbound in the right lane of Interstate 5 when for reasons still under investigation, it crossed over the center divider and entered the southbound lanes of the highway. The Volvo sideswiped a 2013 Peterbilt semi-truck that was hauling a tanker filled with 8,600 gallons of gasoline.

The Volvo then collided head-on with a 2004 Lexus ES330 operated by a 24-year-old Lemoore man. The force of the impact caused the tanker to roll over on the right shoulder of the interstate and spilled an unknown amount of gas.

Chargualaf, who was riding as a passenger in the Lexus, died at the scene. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.

The driver and another passenger in the Lexus, a 21-year-old Lemoore man, sustained minor injuries in the crash. According to the authorities, the 21-year-old Lemoore man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The Volvo driver suffered minor injuries in the crash. The Peterbilt driver was uninjured.

Authorities closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 as they cleanup of the oil spill.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
