3 Pedestrians Struck, Injured by Vehicle on Mission Street in San Francisco

3 Injured, Stephen Kernan Arrested in San Francisco Hit-and-Run Accident at Mission Street and 23rd Street

San Francisco, California (February 14, 2020) – Three pedestrians were injured after being struck by a suspected drunk driver Wednesday afternoon at an intersection in San Francisco’s Mission District, police said.

Authorities responded to the Mission Street and 23rd Street after a report of a pedestrian accident that occurred at about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, February 12.

According to the police, a Toyota Prius, driven by Stephen Kernan, 62, was traveling westbound on 23rd Street when it turned right onto Mission Street against a red light and hit a Muni bus. The Prius continued and struck a male pedestrian who was walking in a crosswalk.

The Prius then drove onto the sidewalk and struck a man and a 69-year-old woman who had just gotten off the bus.

The two male pedestrians, ages 49 and 34, both from San Francisco, sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital. The woman had non-life-threatening injuries.

Kernan initially left the scene but later returned. He was arrested and booked into custody for running a red light and two counts of not stopping for an accident resulting in an injury.

An investigation into the crash is underway.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
