Two Killed in Apple Valley Crash on 15 Freeway near Hodge Road
Apple Valley, California (January 19, 2020) – Two people were killed early Sunday morning in a fiery traffic accident involving a pair of semi-trucks in Apple Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly accident happened at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday, January 19 on 15 Freeway, just south of Hodge Road.
The CHP said a semi-truck reportedly rolled over on the right shoulder of the freeway. A second semi-truck then hit the overturned semi. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.
Firefighters responded to the scene and found both cabs of the trucks completely destroyed. The fire crews upgraded to call a hazmat team because there were pallets of cigarette lighters.
The trailer on the semi that overturned was empty.
One truck driver and a second person were killed in the crash. Authorities said the second person killed was either a passenger or a good Samaritan who stopped to help. Their names have not been disclosed pending notification of family.
One patient was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center with unspecified injuries. A second person declined medical treatment.
Authorities closed all lanes of the southbound 15 Freeway following the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
