2 Killed in Fiery Big Rig Collision on Interstate 15 in Barstow

2 Men Killed, Another Hospitalized after I-5 Big Rig Crash near Barstow

Barstow, California (January 20, 2020) – The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery fatal big rig collision that happened early Sunday morning on Interstate 15 near Barstow.

Authorities said a big rig driver and a Good Samaritan were killed in the accident, and one other person was hospitalized.

CHP and San Bernardino County Fire Department officials responded to the scene after reports of a big rig crash that happened at around 4:15 a.m. on southbound 15 Freeway, south of Hodge Road.

Investigators said a big rig was traveling south when the driver lost control and drifted to the right into the desert, then overturned while attempting to veer back onto the roadway. The truck came to a rest onto its side, partially blocking the No. 3 lane of southbound traffic.

A man who was driving a Mazda came upon the crash scene and stopped to assist the big rig driver.

As the Good Samaritan was trying to help the driver, a second big rig crashed into the overturned semi, causing it to catch fire.

The driver of the burning big rig died in the crash.

Meanwhile, the second big rig came to a rest on top of the Good Samaritan, killing him at the scene.

The 52-year-old Tennessee man driving that big rig was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. His condition was not mentioned.

Firefighters who responded to the scene extinguished the fire and cleaned hazardous chemicals that leaked out of one of the trucks.

Southbound traffic was halted following the collision. All lanes were reopened just after 2:00 p.m.

CHP is investigating the accident.
