Willits Man Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 20 in Blue Lakes

44-Year-Old Willits Man Killed in Blue Lakes Car Accident on Highway 20 at Blue Lakes Lodge

Lake County, California (January 15, 2020) – A 44-year-old Willits man was killed Sunday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash in the Blue Lakes area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at around 4:11 p.m. Sunday, January 12 on Highway 20 at Blue Lakes Lodge.

The CHP said the Willits man was driving a 1991 Toyota Pickup eastbound on Highway 20 at approximately 50 miles per hour when for unknown reasons, he allowed his Toyota to cross the solid double yellow lines into the westbound lane and sideswiped a 2000 GMC Sierra that was traveling westbound.

The force of the impact caused the GMC to spin out on the north side of Highway 20. The Toyota continued into the westbound lane and collided head-on with an oncoming 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 that was traveling at about 40 miles per hour.

The GMC came to a rest on its wheels on the north embankment of Highway 20,  the Toyota came to a stop, also on its wheels on the north shoulder of Highway 20 and the Dodge came to a stop on the northern shoulder of Highway 20.

The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital. He was then transferred to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the GMC was identified as Gabriel Gutierrez, 57, of Kelseyville. Gutierrez was not injured in the crash.

The driver of the Dodge was identified as Phillip Nasca, 51, of Eureka. Phillip and his passenger, Mia Nasca, 24, of Eureka, were not injured in the accident.

Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
