According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2009 Honda, driven by the Visalia man, was traveling in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 south of Merritt Drive at about 7:42 p.m. April 8 when the back left tire blew off.
The man stopped on the right shoulder of Highway 99 north to inspect his car. As he was standing outside his Honda, a 2009 International semi-truck struck him.
The victim, whose name has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck, Richard Vargas, 41 of Visalia, stayed at the scene and was cooperative, authorities said.
Alcohol or drugs were not considered a factor in the accident.
The crash remains under investigation.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
