Several Hurt after U-Haul Drives Into Crowd on Highway 101 in Encinitas

Multiple Hospitalized after  Encinitas Vehicle Crash on Highway 101

Encinitas, California (March 1, 2020) – three people were hospitalized after a crash where a man drove a U-Haul van into a crowd of people outside a bar in Encinitas, on Sunday, March 1, at around 1:19 a.m. police said.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash on the 500 block of South Cast Highway 101.

The man intentionally drove the van into the crowd at The Saloon Bar.

Three people were injured in the crash. One of the victims was taken to was Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries. The other two victims were transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, also with serious injuries.

Two other people sustained minor injuries while detaining the man and they were transported to Scripps Encinitas.

The man was at The Saloon Bar and was asked to leave due to his level of intoxication. The suspect aggressively left the bar before entering his van and intentionally driving it into a crowd of people standing outside the bar.

Witness said the driver was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and DUI. He is being held at the Vista Detention Facility.

 The crash remains under investigation.
