Santa Rosa, California (February 17, 2020) – Two California Highway Patrol officers were hospitalized early Sunday morning after an alleged DUI crash in Santa Rosa, according to authorities.
The crash took place at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, February 16, on Highway 101 near Fulton Road.
Authorities said a 1997 Nissan Versa driven by Eric Reab, 25, of Santa Rosa, was traveling on southbound Highway 101 when it approached a CHP patrol car from behind allegedly going more than 100 miles per hour.
The Nissan then rear-ended the CHP patrol. Due to the impact, the Nissan overturned and came to rest near the right shoulder with major damage while the CHP’s car came to a stop on the right shoulder.
The driver of the patrol unit, Officer Russell Smith, and his passenger, Mitchell Perez, suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash. Both were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Reab was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County jail on suspicion of felony drunken driving, DUI driving causing injury and a misdemeanor charge for allegedly refusing to take a field sobriety test.
He was held on $100,000 bail.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
