Richard Murphy Injured in Fatal Tehama County Big Rig Crash on South Avenue near Mary Avenue

Tehama County, California (March 23, 2020) – Authorities are investigating a Sunday night traffic crash that killed one person and left another injured in Tehama County.

The fatal accident occurred on South Avenue, just west of Mary Avenue, at about 10:30 p.m., on March 22.

A 2011 Nissan Altima was traveling eastbound on South Avenue when, for unknown reasons,  it drifted into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a 2015 Mack big-rig towing a tanker-trailer full of diesel fuel.

The driver of the Nissan, only identified as 45-year-old man, a Mexican National, was declared dead at the scene.

The big rig driver, Richard L. Murphy, 65, of Chico, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Traffic on the roadway was rerouted for more than three hours due to the accident.

It is undetermined whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
