Antioch, California (May 9, 2020) – A 24-year-old Pinole man is dead, and a 23-year-old woman is nursing injuries after an auto-pedestrian crash that occurred Friday at about 9:20 p.m. on Highway 4 in Antioch.
According to a local news source, the man was in the highway lanes near the Laurel Road exit when the accident occurred.
The car that hit the victim was being driven by a 23-year-old Bethel Island woman and was heading west on the highway when the pedestrian appeared in the vehicle’s path.
The California Highway Patrol said the man died at the crash scene. The driver of the vehicle was hospitalized at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Two passengers in the car were not injured.
Officers diverted traffic off the highway and onto Laurel Road as they investigated.
Authorities ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash or events leading up to it to contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
