Homeless Man Suffer Major Injuries in Chula Vista Pedestrian Accident near Interstate 5 and J Street

Chula Vista, California (January 25, 2020) – According to a local news source, a pedestrian was struck and injured by a vehicle early Friday morning in Chula Vista.

The crash took place at about 2:00 a.m. Friday, January 24, near southbound Interstate 5 and J Street.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a sedan was traveling southbound on Interstate 5 when it veered off the right shoulder across the J Street on-ramp and went down an embankment off Bay Boulevard. The sedan then struck a homeless man in an encampment before it burst into flames.

The female driver of the sedan managed to get out and crawl away from the wreckage.

The pedestrian was taken to UCSD Medical Center with major injuries. His name and condition at this time were not immediately available.

The sedan driver was also taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Authorities later arrested the woman on suspicion of driving under the influence after she was released from the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
