Modesto, California (March 25, 2020) – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a truck at the intersection of D and Ninth streets in downtown Modesto late Tuesday morning, authorities said.
According to the report, a big rig with two trailers was traveling southwest on D Street and was turning right onto the Ninth at about 11:40 a.m. March 24, when the right-hand heels of the second trailer run over the pedestrian who was attempting to walked between the trailers.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and declared the man dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending family notification.
The operator of the truck did not stop after hitting the pedestrian and continued onto Highway 99. Police later located the driver and interviewed him.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
