The crash happened at about 6:05 p.m., on June 5, on Highway 166 near Bonita School Road.
The California Highway Patrol said a 2004 Nissan 350Z, driven by Miguel Preciadonava, 20, was traveling eastbound on Highway 166 at an alleged high rate of speed while overtaking other vehicles on the right dirt shoulder of Highway 166 when, for unknown reasons, it lost control and spun across the highway.
The Nissan 350Z reportedly crashed head-on into a 2017 Nissan Altima, operated by Oscar Campos, 30, of Santa Maria, causing the Altima to overturn and land on its roof, just off the westbound shoulder of West Black Road.
The Preciadonava’s car continued driving eastbound on the wrong way, where it finally collided with a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt compact car, operated by Nabor Ortizlopez, 28, of Santa Maria.
Multiple victims were extricated from their vehicles by the first responders who arrived at the scene.
Campos and Preciadonava were declared dead at the crash site.
Ortizlopez sustained minor injuries and was aided at the scene.
A 6-year-old girl, and a 3-year-old boy, both passengers in the Nissan Altima, sustained critical injuries and were flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.
Beatriz Estrada, 28, of Santa Maria, a third passenger in the Nissan Altima, suffered minor injuries and was also treated at the scene.
Traffic on Highway 166 was stopped for several hours following the accident.
