Maria Nieves-Lopez, Gilberto Alcazar-Lopez ID’d as 2 Victims Killed in Gardena Crash at Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue
los Angeles, California (December 30, 2019) – The Los Angeles County Sheriff–Coroner has identified the two people who were killed early Sunday morning in a traffic accident in the Gardena area as Maria Nieves-Lopez, 39, of Lynwood, and Gilberto Alcazar-Lopez, 40, of Rancho Dominguez.
The deadly crash was reported at around 12:39 a.m. Sunday, December 29 in the area of Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.
Authorities said a man was driving a black Tesla southbound on Vermont Avenue when he exited off the westbound Gardena (91) Freeway at a high rate of speed and allegedly failed to stop at a red light, hitting a Honda Civic that was traveling westbound on Artesia Boulevard.
Two occupants of the Honda, now identified Nieves-Lopez and Alcazar-Lopez, were declared dead at the scene of the accident. It was not immediately clear if or how the two were related.
A man and a woman who were inside the Tesla were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Their current conditions were not immediately disclosed.
No other details about the crash were given.
The accident remains under investigation.
