Luis Avila-Arriaga Hurt in Pedestrian Crash on Highway 29 in Napa

Luis Avila-Arriaga ID’d as Person Injured in Napa Pedestrian Accident on Highway 29 near Imola Avenue

Napa, California (February 22, 2020) – The California Highway Patrol has identified Luis Avila-Arriaga,32, as the pedestrian who was injured after being hit by a car on Friday night in Napa.

Avila-Arriaga was  trying to cross on Highway 29, just north of Imola Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. on February 21 when he was struck by a vehicle.

The police said a Land Rover, driven by  Bettina Sichel, of Sonoma, was travelling southbound at about 55 mph when it struck Avila-Arriaga who was attempting to cross the highway.

Authorities said Avila-Arriaga moved from the east side of the road and walked directly in front of the land Rover.

Avila-Arriaga, who was intoxicated at the time, was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa with major injuries.

Sichel was neither injured nor driving under the influence.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
