2 Pedestrians Hit, Injured by Vehicle at Haight and Ashbury Streets in Haight Ashbury
2 Men Hospitalized after Haight Ashbury Pedestrian Accident on Haight and Ashbury Streets; Case Estorco Arrested
San Francisco, California (February 26, 2020) – Two pedestrians were struck and injured by a vehicle Monday night at an intersection in Haight Ashbury neighborhood in San Francisco, according to authorities.
The crash occurred at around 9:15 p.m. Monday, February 24 at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets.
Police said two male pedestrians were at the intersection when, for undetermined reasons, they were hit by a vehicle driven by Case Estorco, 18, of Patterson.
One of the pedestrians, only identified as a man in his 30s, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
The second victim in his 20s sustained serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
Estorco did not stop to render aid to the victims and fled the scene. At around 9:45 p.m., Estorco reportedly slammed into a car that was parked on the sidewalk.
Authorities said Estorco also intentionally crashed into a marked police cruiser near Crown Terrace and Twin Peaks Boulevard.
Estorco was later arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, driving under the influence, battery on a peace officer, hit and run, battery causing serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
A person on foot is no match for a large, multi-ton vehicle. Pedestrians have virtually no protection when they are hit by cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other vehicles. Sadly, this often leads to catastrophic injuries and/or death.
