Man Killed in Pedestrian Accident on Highway 273 in Redding, Stewart Helmer Arrested

Redding, California (June 19, 2020) – A man was hit and killed by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver on Wednesday night in Redding.

The fatal collision happened on Highway 273 near Breslauer Way at about 10:45 p.m. June 17.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 63-year-old Stewart Helmer was driving an SUV on the highway when he saw a man on the west side of the road. He swerved but could not avoid hitting the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was rushed to Mercy Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Helmer stopped at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

Helmer showed signs of being intoxicated and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The identity of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
