Maria Ortiz Killed in 2-Vehicle Accident at Rice Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard in Oxnard

Maria Ortiz Identified as Woman Killed in Oxnard Car Crash at Rice Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard

Oxnard, California (June 8, 2020) – The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified Maria Perez Ortiz, 41, of Oxnard, as the woman who was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Saturday morning in Oxnard.

The deadly accident happened at the intersection of Rice Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard, at about 7:55 a.m., on June 6.

A 2017 Nissan SUV was stopped at a red light on northbound Rice Avenue at Channel Islands Boulevard when, for unknown reasons, it was struck from behind by a 2000 Lexus SUV, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Lexus was also heading northbound on Rice Avenue when the crash occurred.

The Nissan reportedly came to a rest in the center median, while the Lexus ended up off the roadway along northbound Rice Avenue. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

Ortiz, a passenger in the Nissan, was declared dead at the crash site.

A 14-year-old Oxnard boy, the driver of the Nissan, sustained major injuries and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.

A 33-year-old Lake Forest woman, the Lexus driver, was also taken to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries. She was placed under arrest for allegedly driving under the influence.

Ortiz and the 14-year-old Oxnard boy were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident while the Lexus driver was not, the police said.

Traffic on Rice Avenue was stopped for several hours following the mishap.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact the CHP’s Ventura-area office at 805-662-2640.

According to Arin Khodaverdian, the Managing Partner and CEO Alpine Law Group, a separate investigation by an experienced attorney is necessary to clearly uncover the circumstances surrounding the collision. “An attorney will also help the victim to navigate all the legal processes in pursuit of fair compensation and justice. Car accident claims are rarely straightforward, and, regardless of the circumstances involved, liable insurance companies will often do everything possible to limit their out-of-pocket expenses by either devaluing or outright denying your claim. It is crucial, therefore, that you have an experienced attorney on your side,” said Arin.

What to Do At the Accident Scene

Nobody is ever prepared for an accident. However, knowing what to do in case you are involved in the accident is very crucial. The following steps will help you ensure your safety and the safety of others.

  1. Stay at the scene and don’t panic.
  2. Check for injuries and immediately call for an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
  3. Notify the police even if no one is injured. The police will examine the scene and document the accident. At this point, it is important to record accurate information. You can later request a police report.
  4. If the accident is minor, it is advisable to move the vehicles to the shoulder and turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights to ensure the safety of other motorists.
  5. Gather information about the other drivers involved in the accident. Also, talk to witnesses and get their information.
  6. If possible, take photos of the damage to your car and the surrounding area.
  7. Do not admit fault or discuss the accident with anyone. Do not sign any papers unless requested by the police.
  8. Do not leave the accident scene until the police have left.

After leaving the accident scene,

  1. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
  2. Get a copy of the accident report from the police.
  3. Get a property damage valuation.
