Robert Sawaya ID’d as Man Killed in Palm Springs Car Crash on Interstate 10 near Monroe Street Saturday afternoon

Palm Springs, California (September 9, 2019) – The Riverside County Coroner’s office has identified the man who died Saturday afternoon in a traffic accident in Palm Springs as Robert Sawaya, 61, of Coachella.

The deadly crash happened at around 2:50 p.m. Saturday, September 7 on Interstate 10, just east of Monroe Street.

Authorities said Sawaya was driving eastbound on Interstate 10 when for an unknown reason,  his 2017 Buick SUV collided with a 2005 Ford Focus.

The force of the impact caused the SUV to roll over and came to a rest on the right dirt shoulder. The Ford came to a stop in the center divider.

Sawaya, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was thrown into the back of his SUV. He was taken by responding paramedics to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Two occupants of the Ford, a 23-year-old Coachella woman and a 20-year-old Indio woman, were not injured in the crash.

No other details were given regarding the crash. Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
