Jason Clary Struck, Killed by Amtrak Train near Fourth Street and Bancroft Way in Berkeley

Jason Clary ID’d as 1 of 2 Pedestrians Killed in Berkeley Train Accident near 4th Street and Bancroft Way

Berkeley, California (September 17, 2019) –  One of the two men who struck and killed by an Amtrak train Thursday night in Berkeley has been identified as Jason Clary, 37.

The fatal accident took place at about 8:09 p.m. Thursday, September 12 on Union Pacific Railroad tracks near Fourth Street and Bancroft Way not far from the Berkeley Amtrak station.

Authorities said Clary and a 31-year-old man were on the tracks when for reasons still under investigation, they were hit by Amtrak’s San Joaquin Train which was traveling from Bakersfield to Oakland.

Clary and the other man who were transients died in the accident. According to the authorities, both men had been living in one of the two homeless encampments along the Interstate 80 underpass near University Avenue which was cleared by Caltrans that week.

None of the occupants onboard the train was hurt in the accident.

Authorities are investigating the accident.
