Female Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run, DUI Accident, in Visalia; Manuel Mesa Arrested

Woman Killed in Visalia Bicycle Crash on Court Street near the Modoc Ditch Bike Trail

Visalia, California (September 12, 2019) – A 61-year-old female bicyclist died in a hit-and-run accident that happened Wednesday afternoon in Visalia, a local news source reported.

As per the report, Visalia police said the accident took place at about 1:30 p.m. on Court Street at the Modoc Ditch Bike Trail.

Authorities said the female rider failed to stop for traffic on Court Street as she was traveling east on the Modoc Ditch Bike Trail and she was hit by a Honda driven south on Court by 40-year-old Manuel Mesa.

Reportedly, Mesa briefly stopped but did not assist the victim who was attempting to get up. Mesa then fled the scene and ran over the bicyclist, dragging her about 200 yards.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and took the woman to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to her injuries.

Police said Mesa was identified by witnesses. His car was found in the 1500 block of North Turner Street. The suspect was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened. He was arrested and booked into the Tulare County Pretrial Facility. He will face charges in DUI, causing great bodily injury or death, hit-and-run and homicide.
