43-Year-Old Tony Koehl Hurt in Goleta Crash on Highway 101 and Las Varas Canyon Road
Goleta, California (September 18, 2019) – Authorities have identified 43-year-old Tony Koehl of Covina as one of the four parties hospitalized after a traffic collision Tuesday afternoon last week in Goleta.
The collision happened at around 1:13 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, on southbound Highway 101, just north of Las Varas Canyon Road.
As per the CHP officials, 33-year-old Garrett Staab of Tucson Arizona was driving a 2007 Ford F350 on northbound Highway 101. He then made a U-turn from the left-hand turn lane of northbound Highway onto southbound Highway 101. The Ford was partially occupying lane 1 of southbound Highway 101 and it was directly in front of a 2015 Toyota Tundra, driven by 35-year-old Austin Buist of San Luis Obispo California.
Mr. Buist tried to avoid the collision by making a right turn. Finally, the front of the Toyota crashed into the passenger side of the Ford. The two vehicles came to a rest at approximately 20 feet off the roadway on the right shoulder of southbound Highway 101.
Koehl, a Ford passenger, suffered broken right side ribs as a result of the crash. Koehl and three other persons to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.
A 35-year-old woman of San Luis Obispo, who was riding in the Toyota, succumbed to her injuries at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The name of the victim was not immediately released awaiting notification of next of family.
Authorities did not suspect alcohol or drugs to have played a role in the collision.
An investigation is ongoing.
