35-Year-Old Austin Buist Injured in Car Crash on Highway 101 and Las Varas Canyon Road in Goleta

35-Year-Old Austin Buist Hospitalized after Goleta Accident on Highway 101 and Las Varas Canyon Road

Goleta, California (September 18, 2019) – 43-year-old Tony Koehl of Covina has been identified as one of the persons injured in a car accident on Tuesday afternoon last week in Goleta, according to authorities.

The crash occurred at about 1:13 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, on southbound Highway 101, just north of Las Varas Canyon Road.

As per the CHP officials, 33-year-old Garrett Staab of Tucson Arizona was driving a 2007 Ford F350 on northbound Highway 101. He then made a U-turn from the left-hand turn lane of northbound Highway onto southbound Highway 101. The Ford was partially occupying lane 1 of southbound Highway 101 and it was directly in front of a 2015 Toyota Tundra, driven by Buist of San Luis Obispo California.

Mr. Buist attempted to avoid the collision by making a right turn. Finally, the front of the Toyota crashed into the passenger side of the Ford. The two vehicles came to a rest at approximately 20 feet off the roadway on the right shoulder of southbound Highway 101.

Mr. Buist suffered cuts on legs and abdomen and complained of pain to legs and neck.  Mr. Buist and three other persons were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, for treatment of injuries ranging from minor to severe degree.

A 35-year-old woman of San Luis Obispo, who was riding in the Toyota, succumbed to her injuries at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The name of the victim was not immediately released awaiting notification of next of family.

A 4-month-old boy identified as Maverick Buist of San Luis Obispo, a passenger in the Toyota, was not hurt in the crash.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered to have played a role in the collision.

An investigation is ongoing.
