Nipton, California (September 17, 2019) – Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that happened on Monday morning in the area of the unincorporated community of Nipton.

The deadly crash occurred at around 11:53 a.m. September 16, on southbound 15 Freeway, just north of Halloran Summit Road in San Bernardino County.

A California Highway Patrol report indicated that, a 31-year-old El Cajon man was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer northbound on 15 Freeway in the lane 1, when he made an unsafe turning movement to the left causing the Ford to swerve off the roadway and enter a dirt median.

The Ford then crossed the center divider and flew as it entered the southbound lanes of the 15 Freeway where it collided head-on with a 2011 Isuzu box truck driven by a 38-year-old man. The man was reportedly driving southbound on Interstate 15 in lane 2.

The Isuzu driver and his passenger, a 54-year-old woman, both Bakersfield residents, were pronounced dead at the scene. A 25-year-old female riding in the Ford also died in the collision.

The Ford motorist and a 1-year- old male juvenile passenger sustained major injuries and were rushed to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, NV.

The freeway was closed as two helicopters landed.

Authorities did not suspect alcohol or drugs to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
