3 Dies, 2 Critically Injured in Nipton Car Accident on 15 Freeway near Halloran Summit Road
Nipton, California (September 16, 2019) – Three people were killed and two others were critically injured Monday morning in a head-on crash in the unincorporated community of Nipton located within San Bernardino County, according to a local news report.
The deadly accident occurred at around 11:53 a.m. on the southbound 15 freeway, just north of Halloran Summit Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 31-year-old El Cajon man was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer northbound on Interstate 15, in the #1 lane at an unknown rate of speed when for an unknown reason, he made an unsafe turning movement to the left causing the Ford to veer off the roadway and enter the dirt center median.
The Ford crossed the center median and became airborne while it entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 15, where it collided head-on with a 2011 Isuzu box truck driven by a 38-year-old man, who was travelling southbound on Interstate 15, in the #2 lane an unknown speed.
The driver of the Isuzu and his passenger, a 54-year-old woman, both from Bakersfield, were declared dead at the scene. A 25-year-old female passenger in the Ford also died in the crash.
The Ford driver and a 1-year- old male juvenile passenger were airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, NV with major injuries.
Authorities closed the freeway as two helicopters landed.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the crash.
